In my quest for products to make my dieting easier and have foods to take with me, I often check out the diet foods out there. I hate to use process weight loss foods but do when in a hurry or not home to get right so I am excited when I see new products. I was curious when I saw a commercial for Slim Fast 1 2 3. Oh that is similar to Medifast and I might want to get a meal replacement or two to try. The first thing I do is go to the web site and look at the plan. Eat 6 times a day. That is similar to Medifast. Well people at least don't have to pay huge money for the plan but you don't get personal weigh in's. Here is the plan from the site:
Every day you'll have a menu of three snacks, two shakes or meal bars and one balanced meal, customized to your taste.
I would like to eat 3 meals and two very small snacks under 150 calories instead of 5 mini meals and one real meal. I feel when on maintenance, it would be too hard to maintain when eating this way. Anyways I checked the ingredient list, see below and found just a few too many things I didn't like at all.
One of the chocolate shakes drinks:
MALTODEXTRIN, SUGAR, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), GUM ARABIC, HIGH OLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, CELLULOSE GEL, MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, BUTTERMILK POWDER,SOY LECITHIN, XANTHAN GUM, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, DEXTROSE, CARRAGEENAN, SALT, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, GUAR GUM, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM (NONNUTRITIVE SWEETENER), ASPARTAME. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: CALCIUM CARBONATE, MAGNESIUM OXIDE, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM ASCORBATE, VITAMIN E ACETATE, FERRIC ORTHOPHOSPHATE, NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, CHROMIUM CHLORIDE, RIBOFLAVIN, BIOTIN, COPPER GLUCONATE, FOLIC ACID, SODIUM MOLYBDATE, SODIUM SELENITE, PHYTONADIONE (VITAMIN K1), POTASSIUM IODIDE, CHOLECALCIFEROL (VITAMIN D3), AND CYANOCOBALAMIN (VITAMIN B12). SWEETENED WITH NUTRITIVE SWEETENERS AND A NONNUTRITIVE SWEETENER. MAY CONTAIN WHEAT. PHENYLKETONURICS: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE.
Where do I even begin here. At the top! Well sugar is the first two ingredients Buttermilk, that is sour, does that balance out all the sugar? Soy is now known to cause issues for woman so I limit my intake of soy and would not want my husband to consume it at all. Hydrochloride wow, do I want to eat that? Another real high quality ingredient is Aspartame, this has been highly reported to be bad for us, so why do they use it? I highlighted a few ingredients that I question. To me many companies are using cheap cheap cheap ingredients in their products and playing it like it is the greatest thing for us. Plus the ratio of protein and carbs is off. 1/3. I like the #'s to be closer together. If 10 grams of protein about 10 grams of carbs. Balanced more. There is a difference of opinion on this but for me this is what I am aiming for.
So I didn't find my easy, healthy, store bought dream diet foods here. Oh well, I should of known. Why do these companies buy cheap ingredients and act like it is the next best thing from sliced white bread? I won't even go there on the sliced white bread. Here is the link for Slim-Fast.

Just want to note this is my opinion and you are free to make yours. Please do so wisely with your body. What works for me may not work for you. If you are concerned please check with your doctor of course. ;-) I wish no harm to any company, they just frustrate me so.
